OBAMA DINGS ROMNEY: 'There Are Not A Lot Of People Who Think They Are Victims'

Barack ObamaPresident Barack Obama weighed in on the leaked video of Mitt Romney's fundraiser Tuesday, offering his first response to his opponent's suggestion that "47 percent" of Americans are "dependent on government" and "believe themselves victims."

In an interview with late-night host David Letterman scheduled to air Tuesday night, Obama said that he doesn't know what Romney "was referring to" when he made the now-infamous remarks.

"One of the things I learned as president is you represent the entire country," Obama said, according to the White House pool report. "If you want to be president, you have to work for everyone.''

''All of us make mistakes," he conceded. "What people want to know though is you're not writing off a big chunk of the country because the way our democracy works...This is a big country. And people disagree a lot but one thing I’ve never tried to do and I think none of us can do in public office is suggest that because someone doesn’t agree with me that they’re vicitms or they’re unpatriotic."

"There are not a lot of people out there who think they’re victims,” he said. There are not a lot of people who think they’re entitled to something.”

But, he added, "we’ve got some obligations to each other, and there’s nothing wrong with us giving each other a helping hand so that that single mom’s kid, even after all the work she’s done, can afford to go to college.”

“When I won in 2008, 47 percent of the American people voted for John McCain,” Obama said. “They didn’t vote for me and what I said on election night was: ‘Even though you didn’t vote for me, I hear your voices, and I’m going to work as hard as I can to be your president.’”

Obama's remarks are further indication that his campaign intends to nail Romney over the "47 percent" comment. In a statement Monday night, Obama campaign manager Jim Messina called the remarks "shocking" and "disdainful," and released a web video Tuesday hammering the Republican candidate for being out-of-touch with average Americans.

Now here are the juiciest parts of the leaked Romney video >

Obama Says He Can't Remember What The National Debt Was When He Took Office

obama lettermanBarack Obama touched on the issue of the federal deficit last night, telling late night talk show host David Letterman that the U.S. doesn't have to worry about the debt "in the short term."

Responding to Letterman's concern about the growing deficit, Obama first deflected blame on to his predecessor, George W. Bush.

"We had a surplus when Bill Clinton was president," Obama said. "When I walked into office, we had a trillion dollar deficit, debt had mounted, and then we had to take a bunch of emergency measures: Saving the auto industry, making sure that the financial system got back on track."

"So now what we've got to do is pare down that deficit, get that debt under control," he went on. "The only way we've ever been able to do that effectively is in a balanced way."

Letterman then followed up by asking how much the national debt was when Obama took office.

"I don't remember what the number was precisely," Obama said, adding later, "We don't have to worry about it short term. But it is a problem long-term and even medium-term."

According to the Treasury Department website, the national debt was $10.6 trillion on the day Barack Obama took office. Today, the national debt is $16 trillion.

Prime Minister Of Britain Apologizes After Failing UK History Test On David Letterman

British Prime Minister David Cameron has been grovelling to the UK press after he failed to pass a history test about his own country.

Cameron appeared on the Late Show with David Letterman last night and was quizzed by the talk show host about British history. The results were not perfect, and the UK press was watching.

WATCH:

According to the Press Association, Cameron got two answers wrong. He had no idea what the English translation of Magna Carta was (it's Great Charter), and was stumped when Letterman asked who had composed Rule Britannia (Thomas Arne, who set words by James Thomson to music).

It may not seem like a big deal, but to the Brits it is. The Mirror labeled Cameron a "Bit of a Twit" while the Sun said that he had "stumbled in a bizarre quiz about Britain."

Cameron told reporters afterwards:

"I'm a history obsessive, so I'm sorry I didn't do better. I think, when I get home and do my children's homework, maybe I need to sit down and do a little bit extra myself."

Read The Witty Rejection Letter David Letterman Sent Jimmy Kimmel In 2002

Jimmy Kimmel David Letterman

Jimmy Kimmel, 44, has idolized David Letterman, 65, since the younger late-night show host was a quirky 11-year-old growing up in Las Vegas.

Kimmel has oft joked the only reason he went into show business was to be friends with Letterman and wondered why anyone would watch his show instead of Letterman’s.

So, when Kimmel was coming off four years as co-host of Comedy Central’s “The Man Show” and about to debut “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” on ABC in 2002, naturally he reached out to Letterman to appear on the show’s premiere episode.

Letterman’s typed response (on personal stationary, nonetheless) is now framed on Kimmel’s desk in his studio office, alongside a photo of his late grandparents and a picture of himself covered in whip cream after popping a fictional zit on Jon Stewart’s forehead.

Read the letter, uncovered by New York Magazine during a recent interview with Kimmel, below:

September 23, 2002

Dear Jimmy,

Thanks for asking me to appear on your premiere. Unfortunately, I will be out of the country on business. I’m sure the program will be a success regardless.

Sincerely,

Dave.

“His response is hilarious,” exclaimed Kimmel to New York Magazine. “He’s not out of the country on business. He knows you know he’s not out of the country on business and just the words ‘on business’—it really makes it a perfect letter for me.”

Ten years later, the two aren’t exactly best buddies but Letterman did appear on "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" for the first time Wednesday as the LA-based show broadcast out of Brooklyn in the wake of Hurricane Sandy.

Letterman's appearance gave Kimmel his biggest Wednesday audience in the show's 10 year history—about 2.4 million viewers.

Leading up to the visit, Kimmel said he was “terrified” to interview Letterman and tried to justify it by saying, “I’m sure for him it’s nothing more than a nuisance, that he’s just doing it to be nice.”

But Letterman was a gracious guest Wednesday as Kimmel showed him photos of his "Late Night"-themed 18th birthday cake and "L8 Nite" license plate on his first car.

Letterman responded by telling his number one fan, "I’ll be honest with you, it was troubling. I kept saying to people, ‘Why is he sucking up to me?’... When I was persuaded that there was some measure of stability here, then I really realized that it was genuine and I couldn’t appreciate it more."

Letterman added, "In show business, one of the precepts is you're not really supposed to be nice to people, especially if you have the same occupation as another person. Jimmy has broken that precept and has been nothing but generous and courteous and kind to me."

But perhaps the elder late-night host is just trying to keep his friends close and his enemies closer.

Starting January 8, “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” will be moved from midnight to the 11:35pm time slot—putting him in direct competition with CBS’ “Late Show” with David Letterman and NBC’s “Tonight Show” with Jay Leno.

"I want to wish you the best of luck when you move the show," Letterman told Kimmel during their interview. "I think it'll be exciting. I think you're going to be perfect at 11:30 ... I couldn't be happier than to have you in the running."

As for what Kimmel thinks of his other competition, Leno, he bluntly states, “Everyone is better than Leno.”

Now watch Letterman's ratings-raising appearance Wednesday on "Jimmy Kimmel Live!"

The Johnny Carson Estate Has Finally Agreed To Let Hollywood Make A Biopic On The Late Show Host's Life

Johnny Carson

Seven years after his death and 20 years since "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson" went off the air, there is finally movement on a biopic about the life of legendary late night host, Johnny Carson.

The film will be based on the Bill Zehme book "Carson The Magnificent: An Intimate Portrait," reports Deadline.

Zehme, who has also written features on late night hosts Jay Leno and David Letterman, was the only journalist Carson spoke to after his retirement in 1992.

The film version of Zehme's book will be adapted for the big screen by John McLaughlin, who wrote the Oscar-winning "Black Swan" and upcoming "Hitchcock."

McLaughlin, who is currently working on the script, will again team up with his "Hitchcock" producer, Tom Thayer, to bring the Carson project to life. The two will reportedly shop McLaughlin’s script to buyers right after the holidays.

While Carson appeared in viewers' homes every week night and won six Emmys throughout his career, he preferred to keep his private life just that while he was alive. This film would uncover the four-times-married Carson's personal life for the first time.

Now who should play the title role?

Amanda Seyfried David Letterman

On Tuesday night, Amanda Seyfried appeared on "The Late Show With David Letterman" to promote her upcoming Christmas day film, "Les Misérables."

But this wasn't an ordinary press appearance by the 27-year-old actress.

In order to help combat a bad case of stage fright, Seyfried knocked back three drinks before sitting down with Letterman — and it showed.

When the late night host asked if she had been drinking, Seyfriend responded, "Yeah, I'm pretty drunk ... I'm a big fan of whiskey."

But it didn't stop there, Seyfried also admitted "I have to go on record saying I've never done a live television after, um, noon without some kind of liquid courage."

Jimmy Kimmel Beats Jay Leno In First Night Of New Time Slot

Jay Leno Jimmy Kimmel

The people have spoken!

According to preliminary Nielsen numbers, Jimmy Kimmel trumped reigning late night king Jay Leno during his debut night in the competitive 11:35 PM time slot.

"Jimmy Kimmel Live!" had a .99 rating compared to a 0.78 rating for "The Tonight Show With Jay Leno" and a 0.63 rating for "The Late Show With David Letterman," reports The Wrap

As of January 8, "Jimmy Kimmel Live!” moved from midnight to the 11:35pm time slot — putting the show in direct competition with CBS’ “Late Show” with David Letterman and NBC’s “Tonight Show” with Jay Leno.

Kimmel opened the show by joking about his improved air time, saying, “I am now 25 minutes closer to my lifelong dream of co-hosting 'The View'."

"I understand what’s at stake here, and I don’t take this responsibility lightly, especially with the Kanye West-Kim Kardashian baby on the way,” Kimmel said in his opening monologue. “This is the time I shine bright like a diamond,” he continued, referencing a Rihanna song lyric.

But what do Kimmel's veteran competition think of the new kid on the block?

"I want to wish you the best of luck when you move the show," Kimmel's ultimate idol Letterman told him during a November interview. "I think it'll be exciting. I think you're going to be perfect at 11:30 ... I couldn't be happier than to have you in the running."

As for what Kimmel thinks of his other competition, Leno, he has bluntly stated, “Everyone is better than Leno.”

And now it appears "everyone" agrees, unless it's beginners luck thanks to the time change hype.

Stay tuned.

Chris Christie Had A Perfect Response When David Letterman Asked Him How He Feels About Fat Jokes

Chris Christie donut

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie shared a donut with David Letterman on "The Late Show" Monday night, where Christie told him he was the "healthiest fat guy you've ever seen."

Letterman asked Christie how he feels about him, since he has made more than a few jokes at Christie's expense.

Christie responded by pulling out what looked like a jelly donut and eating it on set.

"I didn't know this was going to be this long," Christie quipped.

He said he wasn't bothered by Letterman's tendency to pick on him. Last summer, his office released a look at Christie "by the numbers," which dinged Letterman for "327,832" fat jokes. But he said that Letterman's show was his favorite among the late-night lineup.

"From my perspective, if the joke is funny, I laugh," Christie said. "Even if it's about me. If it's not funny, I don't laugh. But I've never felt like it was anything that really bugged me all that much."

Christie and Letterman got into a somewhat serious discussion over Christie's weight, which has come up frequently amid questions about whether it would affect his future political plans. Christie told Letterman that he has both good blood sugar and cholesterol.

It was Christie's first appearance on "The Late Show."

Here's a clip of Christie's appearance, via CBS:

7 Comedians' Epic Disses Of Jay Leno

$

Conan OBrien Jay Leno

In 2010, Jay Leno and the NBC brass behind him ousted Conan O'Brien from the network in what would become known as "The 'Tonight Show' Conflict."

After the incident made Leno look like a bully, his fellow comedians and late night colleagues didn't all react kindly.

The same is now happening in what appears to be a repeat situation — but this time it's Leno in the hot seat, with pressure to keep up with his younger competition like Jimmy Kimmel.

With NBC rumored to be giving 62-year-old Leno's coveted late night time slot to 38-year-old Jimmy Fallon, many are saying Leno is just getting what he had coming.

Jimmy Kimmel is Jay Leno's most outspoken competition.

  • “As a comedian, you can’t not have disdain for what he’s done. He totally sold out,” the ABC late night host told Rolling Stone in January, calling Leno "a master chef who opened a Burger King.”
  • “Everyone is better than Leno,"  Kimmel bluntly told New York Magazine of his competition.
  • On Wednesday, Kimmel told CNN's Jake Tapper: "Obviously NBC is looking to move on, because they did it once already. This would be the second time that this has happened. So it makes perfect sense. And Jimmy Fallon is doing a great job. And he’s very popular. And so, I mean, hey, eventually, it’s going to happen one way or the other. I mean, one way or the other, it gets going to have to happen, right?"

Conan O'Brien was burned by Leno, and now says he has nothing in common with the auto-lover.

  • "The odds are we will both leave this Earth without speaking to each other, which is fine," O'Brien told The Hollywood Reporter after the 2010 "Tonight Show" controversy. "There's really nothing to say. We both know the deal. He knows; I know. I'd rather just forget ... It helps that almost everybody involved in the craziness has been relieved of their jobs."
  • "He and I are different, so we didn't have a lot to talk about in common," O'Brien said during an appearance on Letterman. "I didn't own many automobiles that were made before 1904, primarily of brass and leather… There are very few ways in which he and I relate. We're not interested in the same things. He was my lead-in. He was the host of 'The Tonight Show.' I was the host of 'The Late Night Show.'"

Jimmy Fallon joked about the rumors he is replacing Leno.

  • Fallon opened his show this week by jokingly addressing the rumors: “I have to talk about the rumors that came out today which say that I’ll be moving up to 11:30, or as my parents call it, ‘Umm, still too late.’ Actually the rumors are true: NBC is turning 'The Tonight Show' into a diving competition. So exciting."

David Letterman Asks Lindsay Lohan If She's An Addict

lindsay lohan on david letterman

Lindsay Lohan appeared in a much-hyped interview last night on "The Late Show with David Letterman" and it was ... awkward.

The interview was her first since appearance last November on "The Tonight Show."

The actress was there to discuss her upcoming role in "Scary Movie 5"; however, from the start, Letterman tried to press Lohan on questions regarding rehab, alcohol, and Charlie Sheen

The result was pretty awkward.

Lohan acknowledged the questions Letterman began asking weren't discussed pre-interview.

The actress played ball at first, saying she's heading to rehab May 2, and not considering it a bad thing.

"I think this is an opportunity for me to, you know, focus on what I love in life.," said Lohan. "I don't think it's a bad thing. I think it's a blessing."

Afterward, she didn't say much on the topic, and when she did, it was to zing the host.

Lohan accused Letterman of attempting to take on a "Dr. Phil" role after asking if she had addiction problems.

In the end, it appeared as if Lohan was running the show and Letterman was just along for the ride.

The actress took Letterman's list of notes and topics to discuss and had to tell him to talk about more positive things, like her upcoming film role.

Watch a clip from the interview below:

The entire interview is available on CBS.com starting at 15:00.

Bruce Willis made quite the entrance at the Ed Sullivan Theater for his 27th  appearance on the "Late Show" with David Letterman.

The 58-year-old actor hopped on a Citi Bike, rode across the street and into the theater all the way onto the stage.

"That's one of those things for free bikes!" Letterman exclaimed. "You put a deal in and you can ride it. You need that to cross Broadway because you never know what traffic is going to be like."

"I want to be a little early, always," the "Red 2" actor responded.

Despite some controversy over Manhattan's bike sharing program, Willis seems to be on board. Watch below:

"It's not weird now," he admitted of leaving the NBC sketch comedy show, "but you start to get that itch in August when all these sketch ideas will show up and I'll be like, 'Can I make this sketch last 90 minutes and turn it into a movie?'"

Oprah Appears On 'Late Show' With David Letterman, Jokes About Their 20-Year Feud

david letterman oprah winfrey late show

David Letterman apologized again to former frienemy Oprah Winfrey on Thursday.

It was Oprah's first appearance on "Late Show" since December 2005. She returned to promote her upcoming film, "Lee Daniel's The Butler."

The two were reportedly feuding for more than 20 years. It started in the late 80s when Oprah had an uncomfortable first-time experience on "Late Show." She refused to be a guest again, causing Letterman to crack jokes at her expense and perpetuate exaggerated rumors of Oprah's hate for him.

Letterman also admitted to once sticking her with a restaurant bill, even though the pair weren't dining together.

"She was with Steadman, I was with my then-girlfriend Regina. We were both at a restaurant having lunch on vacation. I said to Regina, 'Oh, this is hilarious, I'm gonna make Oprah buy us lunch,'" Letterman told Jon Stewart in 2010"We got a free lunch and that's where it started."

They've since buried the hatchet — many times over. Oprah and Letterman made amends during her 2005 "Late Show" appearance, during an interview at Ball State University last fall, and again on an episode of "Oprah's Next Chapter" in January.

Thursday on "Late Show," they discussed the movie, her recent trip to Tanzania and meditation.

Late in the interview, Oprah detoured to reflect on how far they've come in their relationship.

Oprah: Aren't you pleased at how we've grown?

Letterman: Uh-huh?

Oprah: It's been like eight years! I mean, the last time I was here I was so nervous, and then you were so nice to me.

Letterman: Well that whole thing was my fault. You know, I'm sorry.

Oprah: I know, you already said you're sorry. You said you're sorry when I had you on my show.

Letterman: But I still feel lousy.

Oprah: No, no, don't even worry.

Tina Fey burglary surveillance footage

Tina Fey recently moved to a small office in Manhattan, where she writes jokes and thinks of new TV show ideas alongside three other people.

But as soon as Fey and her comic crew moved into their new office space, "we immediately got robbed," she told David Letterman while appearing on the "Late Show" Wednesday.

"What happened was we have this small office and these moving guys moved some stuff in and they told us we had to go downstairs to sign for it and then I think one of the moving guys went upstairs and stole a computer," Fey explained. "And that had all my ideas on it."

"It wasn't Jay Leno, was it?" Letterman joked.

"The police were helpful," Fey assured sarcastically, "but it's hard, New York's a big city and you're like 'some guy stole my jokes' and they're like 'yeah, we'll get right on it.'"

Fortunately, Fey was able to catch her alleged burglar by going over surveillance tape. And luckily for us, Fey and Letterman chose to air the surveillance footage "against all legal counsel."

Louis C.K. was going for a joy ride in his new boat this summer when all of a sudden the comedian came upon a dead body, or "floater," as he later learned it was called.

"I got a boat and I was floating around lower Manhattan and up the East Side and you have a radio on the whole time, it's an open channel. So the coast guard comes on and says 'please be aware there's report of a body in the water south of the Queensboro Bridge,' which is where I was," the comedian told David Letterman while appearing on the "Late Show" this week. "And as soon as I heard it I looked down and there was the dude in the water."

"I called the coastguard and I said 'I got the dead guy right here!' Louis explained, adding "I'd never seen a dead guy. It was creepy and weird and I felt embarrassed for him a little bit."

But then the comedian got serious, saying "I thought about it and this was a person, this was a life, a story, and he's just a floater now. I felt all kinds of things."
